Theo to my friends, Mister Kojak to my clients. They're a varied bunch, all different but all the same. They're all looking for something, or someone. Why? Well, that's what makes them different from each other. Some want justice, some want revenge, and some just want to know the truth. So why do they go to the cops? Because something is stopping them handling things themselves. They don't know what to do, or they're too honest to do it themselves, or too afraid. I guess it never occurs to them that the police might feel the same way. I'll show you what I mean.|276My first story sounds pretty straightforward, but there was more to it than anyone thought.|The only witness - a fine example of the city's gilded youth - sat staring into space, sometimes crooning to himself or giggling like an idiot. He spent several minutes examining the patterns in the wood of the tabletop. I waited for whatever he'd taken to work its way out of his brain, hoping that before he crashed he'd tell me something about the dead girl. We didn't even have an ID on her yet.|Finally he started making sense. He mentioned a guy he had seen with her in a bar. I called in a police artist and we put together a composite picture.|276I knew that face like I knew myself in the mirror. Ron Taylor, a.k.a. "Pin," bank robber and stickup artist. We knew he'd pulled at least a dozen jobs that were still sitting in the "unsolved" files, but he was smart and careful. We'd never been able to pin anything on him in court.|Murder was a new line of business for him, though - and it might give us a chance to nail him. I took the picture, and headed for the bar.|276The joint was classier than I expected, both for Ron and for the neighborhood. I showed the picture to the bartender, and caught his eyes flicking over my shoulder. Looking around, I caught a glimpse of a young man who was leaving the bar in a hurry.|The sight of a 20 dollar bill reminded the bartender that he had seen the guy making a phone call just before he left. I picked up the phone and pressed redial. That gave me the sound of the number.|276The number where Buckstone called Taylor turned out to be another payphone. That wasn't much help, but at least that gave us a rough idea of where Taylor was hiding. We informed the local precinct, and had the phone booth put under a 24 hour watch. Taylor never showed. I didn't think he would.|276Just when I thought the case had gone cold, a report came in of a dead body matching Taylor's description. I got there in a hurry.|It was a cheap eatery. Taylor had argued with someone, who had stuck a knife in his gut and taken off. Luckily, there were plenty of witnesses. Getting the killer's likeness should be easy.|276The face looked familiar, but I couldn't pin a name to it. I looked through books of mug shots, with no luck. Then it hit me. I went down to the archives and pulled the file on a recent high profile murder case. In the file were some photos - mostly of Lee Pang, a big wheel in New York's illegal gambling scene. The face I was looking for was standing right beside Pang in a photo. The case notes gave his name as Bryan - a prime suspect who was on the lam. Now it looked like he was back, with another murder to his credit.|276Bryan had vanished into thin air. Nobody had seen him anywhere, nobody knew anything about him, nobody was talking. That convinced me he was around, I just didn't have a way to find him. Frustrated, I went to the shooting range to blow off some steam.|276I was close to a new precinct record. Just as I was lining up my last shot, the door flew open behind me and in rushed a breathless Ned Root. My shot went wide - no record for me today.|276There was an emergency - a hostage situation. Ned filled me in as we raced to the scene. An armored car heist had gone wrong: two robbers escaped in a car, and three more were holed up in a gun store. They demanded safe passage out of the country, or in two hours, they threatened to start killing hostages. The officers on the scene had gotten a good look at one of the hostage takers, and I decided to work up a composite.|276If Mr. Gable's Irish cook looked anything like that picture, I wouldn't trust him with a pair of chopsticks, let alone sharp knives. Gable insisted it was a good likeness, and I made sure it was circulated to every police precinct, TV station, and bulletin board in the city.|276I didn't have to wait long. In forty minutes the suspect was arrested with the loot. When they heard this, the hostage takers gave up. The weird thing was, the robbery netted nothing but some commercial securities. I wondered who wanted them enough to plan this robbery - and why. The perps weren't talking, but I happened to be nearby when one of them made the only phone call the law allowed him. All I had to do was turn the tones back into a number.|276The number belonged to one William Gable, an expensive lawyer who worked for Lee Pang from time to time.|- Good evening, Mr. Gable. This is Detective Kojak speaking. |- Good evening, detective. How can I help you?|- Mr. Gable, you just received a call from one of your clients concerning a robbery.|- That's right...|- The robbers were caught with stock certificates. Mr. Gable, how would you explain the fact that you own most of the firms named on those certificates?|- What are you implying?|- Nothing at all, Mr. Gable. But if I were you, I wouldn't leave town. You might want to hire a good lawyer, as well.|276To our great surprise, Gable was more than willing to cooperate. His name was on the shares as a front for Lee Pang. He'd become uncomfortable working for Pang, and had cooked up the robbery idea as a way to get out from under his thumb. Needless to say, the honorable Mr. Pang was not going to be pleased. I wouldn't have credited Gable with the nerve to pull a stunt like that, but people are always full of surprises.|276While checking Gable's contacts, I came across a very interesting phone conversation. One of his cronies mentioned something about "getting Lee out of the way." That was a number I had to look up.|276According to the phone company, the phone call was placed from a house on the outskirts of town. The owners had moved away, and the house was for sale. A realtor had been showing the house to a potential buyer when the call was made.|276The buyer's name was fake, but the realtor remembered the face very well. It was time to call in the police artist again.|276I looked at the picture. To say I was surprised, is the understatement of the year. Was this who had been plotting Lee Pang's murder? I headed to the shooting range. I needed time to think, and that precinct record was still waiting for me.|276The Commissioner was at the range plugging bullet after bullet in the target. I joined him.|276- You look tense, Theo.|- You could say that.|- Law and justice can sometimes be very different things. Did you hear Gable broke out of jail?|- So?|- So, things aren't always what they seem. I guess you figured out who ordered Lee Pang's murder.|I shot him a surprised look. He smiled.|- Mr. Lee Pang has kindly agreed to cooperate with us. All it took was the right kind of pressure.|- So it was all planned?|- Not everything, but most of it. The main thing is, Lee Pang's on our side now. Thanks largely to you. Good job, Theo.|276And that's how we got one of our best agents. Was it justice? I'm still trying to decide.
