ReadMe File for DINK SMALLWOOD FULL RELEASE (tm) 10-19-99
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        ----- NOTE FROM SETH ----

Thanks for downloading our game. This is the full game, released by me,
the owner and author of Dink Smallwood. The only things removed in this
special downloadable version that isn't in the full commercially sold
version are the intro.avi (actually had nothing to do with the story
anyway, just Dragon's flying around and such), some pictures of me,
friends and family, and about 20 minutes of CD audio. I've replaced
        them with midis.

Thanks to Justin Martin, Greg Smith (pap) and Bjorn at Iridon for making
        this possible.

Special thanks to Nobuo Kuge for letting us use some of his great free
midi. Check it out at http://www.threeweb.ad.jp/~kuge/indexe.html

Please check credits.txt for the full thank-you list. Check quotes.txt
and mystery/quotes.txt for some strange reading.

Why stop charging for something that people are still attempting to buy?
I dunno. I feel like I made enough money off of it and it's time to
move on. I want to get in the habit of making stuff free a year or two
after it is released if the software is not actively being worked on.
This way many people can enjoy it before it is totally obsolete.

To everybody that spent hard earned cash to purchase the game I give a
hearty thanks. I will be working on a new RPG in '00 and other misc
applications so check the website once in a while.

Thanks Dukie for beta testing this!

Don't hold your breath for a source release, I would be doing the newbie
programming community a huge disservice by letting them see this
monstrosity I had the gall to once call 'coding'... <g>

...dink - the game that proved 3 people CAN make and finish a RPG...

D-MODS/DINKEDIT ----------------------------------------------------------------

        D-Mods

Add-ons for Dink Smallwood are called D-Mods (Dink MODules). There are
numerous D-Mods available for download from The Dink Network
        ( http://www.dinknetwork.com ). To install D-Mods, just double-click
        on the .dmod file.

        DinkEdit

DinkEdit is a development tool that let's you create your own D-MODs,
keep in mind that DinkEdit requires atleast some programming experience
(preferably in C++). Problems resulting from DinkEdit or Dink scripts
are not covered under technical support. If you are keen on creating
your own Dink add-ons, check out the develop directory.

        DFArc v2

A tool created by Andrew Reading and Dan Walma which makes it much
easier to install, play, edit, and package D-Mods.

TROUBLESHOOTING ----------------------------------------------------------------

        The game won't start

Make sure all application programs in Windows (word processor,
spreadsheet, game or any other program) have been shut down. If
any program remain activated, play may become extremely slow,
you may generate system malfunctions and your computer may
                crash.

If you use such programs that start running automatically when
Windows is loaded as anti-virus programs, screen savers or sound
utilities, be certain you shut them down. If them remain
activated, the game may not operate properly.

Make sure that you have proper DirectX drivers installed for
                your video and sound card.

Currently, Dink Smallwood requires a sound card installed. This
is unfortunate for those without the need of a sound card, and
may be fixed in the future..

The game won't start in windowed and/or true color mode

If you previously installed Dink Smallwood, make sure that the
dink.exe does not have any compatibility-mode settings checked.
To clear them, right-click on dink.exe, select Properties, and
go to the Compatibility tab. Uncheck any checkboxes, and click
                ok.

If you still have problems, and know your way around the
registry, try removing instances of dink.exe from
                \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
                \AppCompatFlags\Layers\

The game pauses between playing or switching music tracks

This is a known problem in Windows 2000 and XP, and may be
                fixed in the future.

The game pauses occasionally on older computers

This is due to the fact that Windows 95 simulates memory on the
hard drive when there is not enough physical memory is
available. Check your Windows 95 virtual memory configuration or
install more RAM in your PC (128 MB is recommeded).

Dink keeps walking in one direction without pressing any movement keys

If you have a gamepad plugged in, make sure that it is properly
calibrated. Go into the Control Panel, then Game Controllers.
Select your Gamepad, click Properties, then Calibrate.

If the problem persists, try unplugging the gamepad, or uncheck
                the 'Joystick' option in DFArc2.

The screen fades up and down very slow in true-color or windowed mode!

This is a known problem that seems to effect certain computer
setups, mostly older hardware. True-color and windowed mode
are only required for some D-Mods, and it is recommended that
you run it in full-screen mode without the true-color option
                checked.

        Other known problems/quirks

Older Genius mouse drivers do not work properly with with
DirectX. Please check the Genius website for updated mouse
                drivers.

Note, after installing this, dink will run with the parm
-nomovie by default. If you have the Dink CD and are installing
OVER a CD installation then you can optionally remove the
-nomovie parm to see intro movies. To do this, right click the
icon on the start bar and remove the -nomovie portion. Click
                apply.
